Become a Writer in the Window at Appletree Books in celebration of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) this November! For a second year, we are inviting writers of all ages, formats, and genres in the Greater Cleveland area to celebrate the imagination and determination of writers by writing in our store. Participants do not need to be professional writers or writing a novel to be a part of this project

Appletree Books, an independent bookstore established in 1975, offers an eclectic, well-curated selection of new books in multiple genres for adults and children. We are located in the Cedar-Fairmount neighborhood of Cleveland Heights, at 12419 Cedar Road in the historic Heights Center Building, up the hill from Cleveland’s University Circle. We seek to offer books that transport readers to other places, both visually and verbally, and aim to introduce beautifully illustrated and interesting books to our customers. Each month, Appletree uses its front windows to spotlight the work of a local artist or non-profit institution.

Why write in a bookstore window?
Some use it as a tool to break writer’s block; others to de-mystify the writing process. Think of it as performance art, a way to gain a different perspective on the world, a break from routine, or a unique way to embed yourself in the workings of a bookstore. In the spirit of NaNoWriMo, which values imagination, enthusiasm, determination, and the value of having a deadline, Appletree wants writers in our area to come write in with us, in a space where readers value writers.

If they write anything (short stories, poems, journalism, blog posts, plays, screenplays, essays, a thesis or dissertation, comics, a diary, fanfiction, book reviews, cereal boxes…), we want them. They also need not be professionals! If they write for a hobby, for school, or are participating in NaNoWriMo, we want them. For a couple hours or a whole day in November, Appletree offers Cleveland writers a place to write and a view out our front window onto one of the busiest streets in the first planned neighborhood in the Heights.
