The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) is seeking proposals from qualified public artists for a public art installation at the new W. 34th Street Rapid Transit Station. GCRTA is committed to incorporation of public art as a vital part of it passenger facility construction program. To this end, GCRTA commits a portion of its construction budget to public art. GCRTA accepts both “functional” art that is, artfully designed parts of passenger facilities including but not limited to railings, tile work, seating, signage and lighting elements. Applied art such as murals, sculpture, paintings, etc. are also welcome. Art is selected through GCRTA”s public art selection process, seeking proposals, evaluation of the proposals and artist interviews all in front of GCRTA’s Arts-in-Transit (AIT) Committee.

Public Art Theme:
There are several themes that have emerged through discussions among the stakeholders of the area. They include “wayfinding”, celebrating the history of transportation and the railroad in the area, and also futuristic-looking forward and embracing the new vision of the area. The wayfinding would include signage and art that locates the station in the area. Artists are welcomed to use one of these themes or chose their own.

Selection Process:
3-5 finalists will be selected and asked to provide a more developed concept for consideration of a $500 stipend towards this effort. Those concepts will then be presented to the Arts-in-Transit Committee for further evaluation. Artists are expected to present their concepts in person to the committee. Out-of-town artists will be reimbursed for their travel expenses up to $500 to attend the presentation. All art needs to be the fabricated and installed at station before the station construction is completed.
