This fiction writing workshop is designed to build the student’s competence on several levels. We will explore the basic craft elements of fiction writing, including setting, character, dialogue, scene, structure, voice, the importance of significant details, and the appropriate use of symbols, as well as some crucial habits necessary to grow as a writer. Students will be asked to submit a piece of short fiction that they have been working on (8-15 pages) and offer it to the class for constructive critique in a workshop setting. However, given the time limitation, please keep in mind that we will need to focus on a manageable number of pages per lesson. Once the course is finished, you should have the tools to continue revising and editing your manuscript until it is completed to your satisfaction. For intermediate and advanced writers.

Brush off January’s chill by joining Good Company: a Vocal Ensemble, for Winter’s Fire, a concert of choral works exploring the moods and beauty of the season. Michael Carney, Director and Ruth Draper, Accompanist. The Ensemble will perform Lauridsen’s Mid-Winter Songs and selections by Debussy, Rossini, Poulenc and others. The program will also feature the Premiere of “Winter Bluejay” by local composer, Ruth Draper. Free-will offering.

Ever seen someone on stage, captivating the crowd, and thought “I want to do that”? This class will show you how to create, edit, and perform your own stories. We’ll show you how to turn off your inner critic and turn up your creative juices.

Each student will move a personal story from the draft stage to a performance-ready piece of electrifying theater. In class we’ll create stories, discuss the fundamentals of live storytelling, and provide feedback on each others’ work. Outside of class you’ll be encouraged to attend storytelling shows and discover techniques you can use to enhance your own writing and performances. The class will conclude with a public show (date TBD) where students will join the storytelling community in full.

This simple, but elegant binding is one of the contributions to the American Arts and Craft Movement made by the Roycrofters, and you can learn to bind your own in this one-day workshop. The classic suede cover, over a stitched textblock is finished with thin boards covered with decorative paper or bookcloth, adding strength to the book while keeping the flexibility of a limp binding. We will bind two books, and discuss various techniques appropriate to this historic binding.
Cost is $90 and includes materials

Pressure printing is a letterpress technique used to create textural prints. This two-day workshop provides a wonderful introduction to the Morgan’s Vandercook presses, the workhorses of letterpress printing. You will learn an easy, no-fuss way to print textural elements and other materials to produce atmospheric prints in a series, or as unique and playful variations.

Workshop taught by Betsy Begue
In this one-day workshop, you will use a combination of book binding and French cartonnage techniques to construct a box base from pre-cut book board pieces. A double-hinged lid will be added that opens in opposite directions, exposing different interior compartments. This advanced box structure is intriguing to look at, but as it requires repetition of many basic skills, it is suitable for both novice and more experienced box makers. Discussion will include a comparison of different techniques, appropriate materials, and possible adaptations.
