Heights Arts presents the second iteration of its well received exhibition, Emergent, which shines a light on artists who have recently graduated from area colleges and universities. First presented in 2015, Emergent 2017 celebrates the strength of the northeast Ohio region as a training ground for the great artists of tomorrow. Represented in Emergent 2017 are: Meghan Calvert, Amber Ford, Jessica Howard, Erin Jesson, Jacob Koestler, Samantha Konet, Mike Lombardy, Nathan Prebonick, Rachel Shelton, Maia Stern, Grace Summanen, and Nikki Woods.

Join Heights Arts for the opening reception on Friday, April 21, 6-9 p.m. and meet the artists. An accompanying program, Ekphrastacy: Artists Talk + Poets Respond, is slated for Thursday, May 18 at 7 p.m. The exhibition will be on view through Sunday, June 4.

New works by Cleveland artist Christine Mauersberger opens at Heights Arts on Friday, May 5, 6-9 p.m. Entitled Aquascapes, the watercolor and ink paintings reflect the transient nature of Lake Erie through color and pattern. Christine uses a variety of media to create pieces that range from small and intimate to room-sized installations. She has been the recipient of numerous fellowships and grants, including Ohio Arts Council Award of Individual Excellence in 2013 and 2017, a Cuyahoga Arts and Culture Creative Workforce Fellowship. The exhibition will be on view through June 18.

This one week intensive is geared for professional and college dancers interested in furthering themselves as creative thinkers and who wish to deepen and grow their technical and performance knowledge. This intensive provides a rigorous daily schedule in professional training and creative practice taught by TMP artistic directors, company members, as well as notable guest artists in the dance community. The program will focus on modern dance technique, ballet, improvisation, composition, injury prevention and somatic practices. In addition to movement courses, the program includes courses designed to support artists in the current field, such as, resume revamp, website marketing, dance on film and community action. As part of our marketing course, each artist will receive dance action shots for their portfolio.

Verb Ballets is excited to offer a Summer Dance Intensive on June 12-15th at Verb Ballets Studio in Shaker Heights. This program includes classes in ballet, jazz, musical theatre, contemporary, conditioning and repertory. Classes will be taught by professionals Richard Dickinson, Antwon Duncan, Verb dancers Kate Webb, Christina Lindhout, and Antonio Morillo. Inlet Dance Theatre hosts a fee-based modern dance instructional camp for theatre and dance students. Inlet’s Summer Dance Intensive (SDI) is an aggressive six and a half week training program for ages twelve through young adult. SDI focuses on increasing technical skill sets, collaborative creative process, performing improvisation and repertory. SDI allows students to experience being a dancer in a professional dance company. SDI students will learn nontraditional partnering, Hawkins-based release technique, performance improvisation, composition, and repertory. SDI culminates with performances at Cain Park Evans Amphitheater (Cleveland Heights, OH). In this workshop, participants will look at classic sports memoirs, some of which feature Cleveland sports legends like Lebron James, to begin writing your own. Consider H.G. Bissinger’s Friday Night Lights, which took us to Odessa in West Texas and changed how we felt about high school football, spawned a film and TV series. LeBron James’ own “I’m Coming Home” letter is an example of the power of the sports essay. In the second session, you’ll have a chance to get feedback on your own work. Learn to take your sports recollections and craft them into powerful nonfiction narratives.

Shaker Arts Council (SHAC) presents SHAC on TRAC –The Road to Arts & Community, a celebration of our mission to build the community through the arts and to build the arts through the community. SHAC on TRAC, a series of three “block parties extraordinaire” with entertainment for all ages, will take place throughout the summer. The events will feature an interactive art activity, live music and strolling entertainers. The art activity will engage each participant in creating and contributing one “piece” to a unity sculpture that will grow with each subsequent event. The theme of the art project will be “Everyone has a Story to Tell.” All events are free and open to the public.

SHAC on TRAC will kick off Saturday, June 24, 2017 with the Ludlow Community Association as host. The event will be held from 4 -7 pm at PEP Ludlow School, at the corner of Ludlow and Southington Roads, Shaker Heights, OH 44120. The event will feature Ludlow’s own Ronny Love, former lead singer of the Drifters. The Euclid Beach Rocket Car rides will offer rides from 5:30-6:30 pm. (Rain date: 6/25)

Cleveland Method Acting (CMA), led by Emmy nominated TV and Film Director Eric Swinderman, is now accepting students for the upcoming 4 week program.
Classes will take place August 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th at 6pm
The recommended age for the classes is 18 and up (exceptions can be made on a case by case basis) You can find more information or register for the class by visiting the CMA website.

The classes are centered around The Sanford Meisner Technique, also known as THE METHOD.

Through the Meisner system, the actor becomes fearless and gains a strong confidence that can be applied to all areas of life. The four week class helps the young actor develop a love for the work, and with this, the ability to survive and work as an actor. Using a series of sensory memory exercises the actor will work on a single piece of work for 4 weeks learning how to look at the work from different angles and explore how the method can help the work evolve into a living breathing scene. This is what is commonly known as "method acting."
