The Suitcase Project is a visual arts project that focuses on the collection and/or creation of objects, photographs and writings that may be found in the suitcases that migrants, immigrants or other displaced peoples would bring from their past lives elsewhere. Although centered around storytelling, participants do not need to be artists or writers. It is the hope of this project that work will be created that will open a dialogue in the community and will allow participants to examine relations with the history of their ancestors (including geographic location), creating a space for the participants to connect with themselves and each other.
Submission Deadline: January 15, 2021
Participants will receive a $500 honorarium at the completion of the project and the work created will be displayed on the CPR website along with being a part of a traveling exhibition in CPR's gallery and the Akron Soul Train gallery. Participants will be selected by a panel of jurors and will be notified by January 31, 2021. Through and open call 8 participants who immigrated to migrated to Ohio (up to 2 generations removed) will be chosen to create suitcases of meaningful artifacts from their home countries as part of a traveling exhibition. Participants will have the opportunity to work with a mentor.
