Literary Cleveland
Jan 06, 2021 - Feb 10, 2021 7-9 p.m. | Zoom | Hone Your Craft
In this open-level poetry workshop, we will take the directive to “shelter in place” as a writing prompt to explore where we live and how we live. We will find ways to get lost in our own homes and neighborhoods and see them anew through our poems. This course will offer students the chance to find stillness and possibility in daily life. Each week, students will discuss poems rooted in familiar landscapes and situations, and use exercises to write their own work. Over the course of six sessions, students will write five new poems, and have the opportunity to share work and receive feedback from classmates and the instructor.‍

Reader Series: Adaptation & Lovecraft Country

Literary Cleveland
Jan 09, 2021 - Feb 06, 2021 10 a.m. - 12 noon | Zoom | Community, Hone Your Craft
Adapting a written work is all about bones, breath, and heart: rearranging the bones (structure), choosing the breath (style,) and staying true to the heart (themes) of the original work. Matt Ruff’s 2016 novel Lovecraft Country is both an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s short sci-fi stories and the source material for the hit HBO series of the same name. In this class, we’re going to put these three works in conversation with each other and discover all the ways one story can be told. If you like history, pop culture, dismantling racism and smashing the patriarchy, this class is for you!
