Unlocking Your Story's Potential: Generative Revision Workshop

Literary Cleveland
Feb 10, 2022 - Mar 03, 2022 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. | Zoom | Hone Your Craft
We all have them: drafts that we can't let go. Maybe they're unfinished, maybe a tangled mess. Maybe they're technically proficient but kind of boring, yet they keep pulling us back. In this workshop, we'll tackle these rock-in-shoe, popcorn-kernel-in-teeth drafts, the ones that won't let you go. To do this, we'll work together to find the story hiding beneath the words then complete multiple drafts and draft-adjacent freewrites to unlock the story's potential. This isn't about moving words and sentences around the page; it's about digging deep. Expect to write until your hand hurts. Expect a supportive community and instructor feedback to help these projects reach their full potential.

This class takes place remotely online via Zoom.

Disastrous Dates: Writing Humorous Nonfiction

Literary Cleveland
Feb 11, 2022 6-8 p.m. | Zoom | Hone Your Craft
Dating, that strange human experience where two lonely strangers throw caution to the wind and meet, in the brave and optimistic endeavor of finding romance, sex, and sometimes love.

From the man who arrived to our first date with a huge sticker on his car that read “Joe is Hoe!” To the man who said: “I’m just gonna quickly pee behind this tree!” while we were walking in the park. I’ve had some bazaar and disastrous first dates, and you probably had some too.

In this writing class we’ll document our tragic and—in retrospect—hilarious dates.

We want our reader to feel the cringe, horror, and utter confusion we felt during these unforgettable experiences. Describing the arch: beginning with butterflies in our stomach, the excitement and anxiety of meeting for the first time, daydreaming and expectations, then the dip! The red flags that appear everywhere: what they said, what they did! Using our humorous inner monologue throughout the manuscript, and capturing smell, sound, weather, and how the food/drink tasted at the restaurant.

This class takes place remotely online via Zoom.

Introduction to Ghostwriting

Literary Cleveland
Feb 12, 2022 - Feb 19, 2022 1-3 p.m. | Zoom | Hone Your Craft
Ghostwriters work behind the scenes to complete books, articles and blogs "authored" by someone else--and that's okay with them. Finding clients is the first challenge, and students in this class will learn how to land those big ghostwriting contracts.

Making the right connections, how to pitch the memoir or other ghosting project to prospective clients, why you need a contract (and what to include in it), what's meant by "scope of work" and how to avoid PITA projects will be covered, along with notes on the actual ghostwriting.

Mary Mihaly has written books for doctors, politicians, mental health experts, corner-office executives and other professionals across the globe, and will give you the do's, don'ts, and pitfalls of ghostwriting.

This class takes place online via Zoom. Register to receive the zoom link and class instructions.

Feb 19, 2022 - Feb 19, 2022 1:00-5:00pm | 1375 Euclid Ave, 6th floor, Cleveland, OH 44115 | Hone Your Craft
From January to May 2022, the Odyssey Program at Cleveland State University’s School of Film & Media Arts offers a series of one-day workshops for high school students (aged 13-18) interested in film and media arts.

With a simple green screen, filmmakers can create movie magic by compositing two images or videos together to produce a single image – changing the background to whatever fantastical setting they desire. In this hands-on workshop, students get experience working with green screens in a production setting and then learn to manipulate their footage using digital postproduction software.

Instructor: Rich nova Milne is the Visiting Assistant Lecturer in Postproduction at the School of Film & Media Arts and half of artist duo nova Milne AKA Ms&Mr, who live/work from their studio in Cleveland. nova Milne received the New York Foundation for The Arts Fellowship in Digital/Electronic Arts category in 2020. They are also the recipient of numerous awards, grants and artists' residencies internationally and the US, including a Project Grant from the Australia Council for the Arts in 2018.
