Read Like a Writer: Short Fiction - Session 2

The best way to improve as a writer is to write. The second best way is to read and analyze contemporary literature. Join us for this reader series class where we will take a deep dive into the craft of one short story each month. We’ll unpack character, structure, dialogue, plot, details, theme, tone, cultural context and more using examples from a wide variety of the greatest contemporary fiction writers. We’ll also discuss what we can take away and learn for our own writing styles, projects, and processes. Copies of the stories will be provided in advance of each class. Join us the first Tuesday of each month for advanced-level craft lessons, writer-centered discussion, and great reading.

James Baldwin was a remarkable novelist, a legendary essayist, a civil rights activist, and one of the most influential American writers of the 20th century. Baldwin once said, "You write in order to change the world, knowing perfectly well that you can’t, but also knowing literature is indispensable to the world... The world changes according to the way people see it, and if you alter even but a millimeter the way people look at reality, then you can change it." Join this class and allow the months of reading, analyzing, and marveling at Baldwin’s insight and eloquence transform your thinking and feelings about race, America, history, love, hate, and much more.

Hathaway Brown Theatre Institute (HBTI), now in its 9th year, is conservatory style performing arts training for young people from 1st grade through college. HBTI is part of the Performing Arts Department at Hathaway Brown School in Shaker Heights, Ohio.

HBTI provides students with an immersive curriculum in drama, dance and voice. It is a place for learning, sharing, experimenting, risking, and seeking their artistic voices. In this positive, process oriented atmosphere, students will have the opportunity to interact and learn alongside working professionals in arts. This “intensive” will grow their theater skills, increase their self-confidence, help them gain social skills and open them to a world of possibilities and new ideas. We collaborate to create and maintain an inclusive learning community and foster understanding and respect for all people and multiple perspectives .

Classes run Monday through Friday 9 AM - 3:30 PM in three sessions over the summer.

Developing a Writing Habit - August 2021

The poem "won't you come celebrate with me" itself speaks to the intimate joy of survival and has inspired countless writers since its publication.

This workshop will explore the idea of holidays, how and why individuals choose to celebrate and memorialize events and the ways in which it is done. We will examine the impact holidays have on us --both the ones we love and the ones we do not. We will write new holidays and traditions into existence and rearrange some old ones. We will celebrate what and who we believe deserve celebration, including ourselves.

Inlet Dance Theatre returns to the outdoor stage at the annual Arts in August festival held in Tremont, put on by the TremontWest Development Corporation. This innovative Cleveland-based contemporary dance company will perform a full-length concert with an intermission. This performance will be family-friendly and all are welcome! Feel free to bring lawn chairs and/or picnic blankets; no seating is provided.

Inlet Dance Theatre is one of the region’s most exciting professional contemporary dance companies. Schizo-poetics: An Introduction to the Intersections of Art & Illness

In a world where disability is often excluded from participation, what can the intersections of art and illness teach us about imagining better and more inclusive futures?

This free introduction to the segment of disability poetics that centers living with major mental illness will cover the aesthetics, craft, and ideas associated with Schizo-poetics.

You will read about and discuss the physiology and pathology of Schizophrenia, poems from people living with the Schizophrenias, and assess craft elements in the pieces and how they relate to and communicate the illness.

Course curriculum includes poems from Jake Bailey, Kamden Hilliard, John Berryman, Richard Brautigan, Emile Nelligan, Uuno Kailas, and Rob Colgate.

Inlet’s Premiere of “Caliban Ascendant” at Cain Park with Cleveland Chamber Collective

Free performance: Cleveland Chamber Collective performs three pieces in the first half of the concert with Inlet Dance Theatre presenting a new ballet, Caliban Ascendant, after intermission.

The Cleveland Chamber Collective is committed to the idea that great music can have a great impact. Their mission is to enrich, ennoble, and encourage the diverse people of our community by providing exceptional artistic experiences to all. They seek out new and innovative ways to engage our community.

Caliban Ascendant is a chamber work for players and dancers, inspired by Shakespeare's The Tempest. Shakespeare's play is filled with intrigue and vengeance, but also touches on the themes of colonization, oppression, and cultural appropriation. This work utilizes a string trio, flute and piano and a large battery or percussion. The music is cast utilizing a variety of style and colors to create characters and describe actions.

No tickets necessary for admission.

Introduction to Developing a Writing Habit-September 2021

This two-hour lecture will provide the foundational concepts that we’ll work with in the four-week Developing a Writing Habit Class. We’ll discuss strategies for getting you into your seat, how to combine playfulness with discipline, and discuss the three components necessary for a writing career. We’ll then cover the basics of a process guaranteed to get you started generating raw material.

New students please take note: This class is a prerequisite for the more intensive, workshop-oriented four-week session. It can be taken independently for those wishing to jump-start their writing.

Returning students please note: This introductory session contains material that in the past was discussed on the first week of the class.
