For The Culture: Writing Critical Narratives

For The Culture: Writing Critical Narratives

May 03, 2022 6-8 p.m.
Location: Zoom
Categories: Hone Your Craft
This course will explore published works by known critical writers, such as Samantha Irby, Hanif Abdurraqib, Morgan Parker, Saeed Jones, etc., who all incorporate criticism of pop culture, race and society in their work. As this is an intermediate writing class, participants will read and discuss selected works by the above authors for the first two weeks of the course. Discussion will focus on how the authors integrate these topics into their work and include mini writing exercises for participants to begin generating new work. For the next three weeks, writers will generate new work and participate in a workshop setting to receive feedback from their peers. The final week will be an opportunity for students to share their completed work with their peers. With this course, participants will engage with work that focuses on “difficult” or “taboo” topics, and then use that discussion to consider ways to explore their own topics of interest (possibly gender, sexuality, religion, etc.) in their own work.‍

NOTE: This 8-week class will skip June 14 and resume on June 21.

This class takes place remotely online via Zoom. Register to receive the Zoom link.
